Metrorail, or simply Metro, is the rapid transit system of Washington, D.C., and neighboring communities in Maryland and Virginia, both inside and outside the Capital Beltway, and is the second busiest in the United States behind the New York City Subway. In Maryland, service is provided in Prince George's County and Montgomery County; in Virginia, service extends to Fairfax County, Arlington County, and the city of Alexandria. Metrorail fare is zoned. This means it is not fixed, but varies based on the distance traveled and the time of day. Many of our homestay visitors gave good feedbacks about the metro in Washington, Maryland, and Virginia.
The White House is the official home and principal workplace of the President of the United States of America. Built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia sandstone in the late Georgian style, it has been the executive residence of every U.S. President. The White House was the most visited landmark by our homestay visitors.
The United States Capitol is the capitol building that serves as the seat of government for the United States Congress, the legislative branch of the U.S. federal government. It is located in Washington, D.C., on top of Capitol Hill at the east end of the National Mall.
The Smithsonian Institution was founded for the "increase and diffusion" of knowledge by a bequest to the United States by the British scientist James Smithson (1765-1829), who had never visited the United States himself The Smithsonian is an educational and research institute and associated museum complex, administered and funded by the government of the United States. Most of its facilities are located in Washington, D.C. It has over 142 million items in its collections.
The Library of Congress is the de facto national library of the United States and the research arm of the United States Congress. Located in Washington, D.C., it is the largest by shelf space and one of the most important libraries in the world. Its collections include more than 30 million catalogued books and other print materials in 470 languages; more than 58 million manuscripts.
